It’s more than just great design. As designers, we must appreciate that a project is not ours. It is defined by the entire team, including the client. For my first commission as an architect, my role was to rescue a property declared unfit for use. The lessons learned during this project were immeasurable.
The project designer, Damiano Geraci and I worked closely together, mentoring one another. He taught me the importance of being an expeditor with the New York City Department of Buildings in order to cut through red tape and defend my projects from city regulators. In turn, I encouraged him to become an architect and together we celebrated his license with his Sicilian festive, food-forward family in Brooklyn.
“Throughout her career, the one constant with Ayumi has been her tenacity and cleverness in resolving design problems as perfectly and thoughtfully as possible.”
— Damiano Geraci, Architect
We must recognize the value in roles within a team, the value of a good working relationship. We recognize talent within one another, invest our own interests within the success of others. Mentorship is about team and alliance building. When working with others, strive to determine an individual’s strengths and build teams where our own strengths support and teach one another.
Determining how to fit in. Restraint–not creating more attention. Lesson in style adaptability, non-assuming, create calm, not bend but blend toward justice.
